England’s Bowlers on top!

England’s Liam Plunkett, Steve Harmison and Matthew Hoggard were all on form in last weeks round of matches in the County Championship.

Liam Plunkett: 5 wickets for 105 off of 32 overs.

Steve Harmison: 5 wickets for 61 for 19.3 overs.

Matthew Hoggard: 5 for 34 off just 14 overs for Yorkshire against Worcestershire.

This coupled with a rather washed out tour match against Somerset means that the England are in much better shape than the West Indies before the first test this Thursday at Lords.

Tim Ambrose Warwickshire’s Tim Ambrose scored an unbeaten 251, supported well by team mate Jim Trougton (162) against Worcestershire this week at New Road (Worcestershire).
Younis Khan Yorkshire and Pakistan’s Younis Khan scores 106 followed by 202* in his 2 innings’ against Shane Warne’s Hampshire.
Simon Katich Forgotten Australian Simon Katich scores 221 for Derbyshire, supported well by fellow Aussie, Ian Harvey (153). Ian Harvey now qualifies as a British National (watch this space!).
Michael Vaughan Michael Vaughan set to miss the first test against West Indies at Lords, 17th March.
Surrey Cricket Club Surrey Slump to a 3rd defeat in a row in the county Championship, only days after posting a World Record score in the one day game.

Michael Vaughn
VAUGHAN SHOWING PROMISE as he gets some runs for Yorkshire. The usual critics were asking for Vaughan’s head as England’s one day captain. As the captain he has to shoulder some of the responsibility for the poor performances, but believe it or not he was one of our best performers with the bat!

He got 72 before getting run out in his first innings and was alarmingly retired hurt in the second innings with a damaged finger.

Lets hope cricket’s equivalent to footbll’s Michael Owen (Mr Glass) is fit enough for the up coming tests.

My verdict is that a pack of wild horses couldn’t drag him away from the up coming series with the West Indies on home soil. He was he missing link in the Ashes and I believe his influence both on and off the field will lead us to a series victory over new captain, Ramnaresh Sarwan’s West Indies side.

Surrey Cricket Club
FROM HEROES T0 ZEROES (and just one score in double figures for Surrey’s batsmen). Less than one week ago, Surrey put on a world record score for a limited over game, posting an impressive 496 for 4 off their allotted 50 overs. Now they are on the overnight score of 34 runs for 6 wickets, and staring their third defeat in a row in the LV County Championship - Division One against Lancashire (who also are yet to register a win).

Surrey only posted a first innings total of 284 off of 93.3 overs, a far way from their world record 496 runs off half the amount of overs, with more or less the the same line up!

Is this a fundamental problem with the way we approach the two facets of the game? The differences are glaringly obvious between the limited over game and the 4 day match or test match. Everybody knows this.

However: Last time I checked, the size of the stumps and pitch were the same, the ball was still round and the bat made of wood, and guess what, the people who play it are all the same too!

Help is urgently needed!!!
